Taiwan Begins Airport Expansion
Taiwan has launched a project to expand Taichung Airport into an international air hub.
The Ministry of Transportation and Communications said the facilities at the airport are inadequate to handle international charters and direct cross-strait flights.
The first phase of the project, expected to cost TWD3.89bn ($121.18m), will include the construction of a new international terminal and maintenance hangar, and improvement of the existing taxiways.
Once the first phase is completed in late 2012 the existing terminal will be able to handle one million passengers each year, while the new terminal will have an annual capacity of 1.35 million, according to CNA.
